Markings and Disfellowships

Sep 21st, 2010 | By | Category: disfellowship, marking

Markings and disfellowships happened to various leaders and members who were critical of the church.  A marking would be announced to the church and the members warned to stay away from the person marked.  Only leaders were allowed to have contact with the marked person.   If a member were to disobey this warning and continue to fellowship with the marked person, then the member would also be marked and removed from the church.   Being disfellowshipped  is removal from the church.  Markings happened to both members and non-members of the ICOC.

A great article regarding the history of the ICOC and many of the stories that follows on this page can be read HERE.

Ayman Akshar

1994 – “In early 1990, Ayman was put in charge of the finances of the London Church of Christ, and as such had been present for a number of private meetings. He found a number of financial improprieties, about which he notified the leaders, thinking they would be as horrified as he was and fix the problem. When he was told to keep quiet, he agonized for a few months and then left, concluding that the ICC was not what it claimed to be if it would not even respect the laws of the country in which it was operating.” REVEAL.ORG, 1987-present – The ICC/ICOC era

“Akshar was a member of the London Church of Christ for seven years and a close personal friend of Scott’s. In 1993 Ayman Akshar was “publicly marked” as an enemy of the church by Scott, and members were told not to have any contact with him.”  Ayman Akshar, Close to the Edge, February 1994, Issue 4

No Reply from Scott.

Rick Bauer

1991 – “My wife and I were recruited from the Denver Church of Christ (a mission planting of the Crossroads congregation, which started after Lucas was fired), where I was serving as an evangelist for the congregation, to join the staff of the Boston Church of Christ. In addition to fulfilling a life-long dream to earn my doctorate in Biblical Studies (Kip McKean promised me that I would have that opportunity, a promise he later would break), I thought that my being closer to the center of the movement would allow influence and opportunity to bring more scholarly depth to bear on what I had thought was a serious lack of depth on the part of the leadership of the group (most of the current leaders have no formal training in either Bible or preaching or theology, and while this is not a disqualification for ministry, when matters of original doctrine or what the original text taught were being addressed, few of the upper-echelon leaders had the training to truly be confident in anything except their own opinions, and generally deferred to what Kip McKean wanted). In short, I thought that moving to Boston would be helpful to not only me but to the group as well.”  Rick Bauer: Responding to the Boston Movement/ International Churches of Christ

Daniel Eng

1991 – After joining the Central London Church of Christ in 1984, Mr. Eng served on several mission plantings.  Read the account of his marking and disfellowship.

Ron Gholston

1988 – A former “mainline” Church of Christ minister who joined the Boston Church of Christ in 1985.  In 1988 he wrote a letter to the Boston Church elders with his concerns about anti-biblical teachings.  Mr. Gholston has allowed REVEAL.ORG to publish his original letters to the elders.

Steve Hassan

1989 – Never a member of the ICOC.

“See, Paul marked dangerous men. He did not want Christians to get stacked out by wolves in sheeps’ clothing.  Tonight I publicly mark as dangerous wolves in the flock of Jesus Christ Steve Hassan, Jerry Jones, Buddy Martin. We need to pray for them. We should stay away from them. ”  Kip McKean, They Hated the Dreamer, 1989 Boston Seminar

Jerry Jones

1989 – He became a part of the Boston Church of Christ in June 1984 and served as a Bible Talk leader, House Church leader, deacon, Zone evangelist, editor of the bulletin and was appointed to be one of the three elders in April 1986. He resigned his position in October 1986 and moved to St. Louis, MO.  Dr. Jerry Jones, What Does The Boston Movement Teach, Vol 1

He did not want Christians to get stacked out by wolves in sheeps’ clothing.  Tonight I publicly mark as dangerous wolves in the flock of Jesus Christ Steve Hassan, Jerry Jones, Buddy Martin. Kip McKean

2006 – Los Angels International Church of Christ publicly marks Kip McKean.

“Because of these unrepentant deceitful and divisive actions, and after careful consideration, we are publicly marking Kip McKean, the force behind these efforts, Sal Valasco, the local leader of this faction, and whoever else promotes this action with them.”

Ed Powers and the Indianapolis Church Split

Lastly, you need to obey the marking. You are to have no contact with Ed Powers or staff or anybody that has decided to be at the other church. If you disobey the marking, then we will be forced to warn you if you are in our fellowship. If you leave, then you will be marked. You are divisive. I am very serious. It is an issue of salvation.
